For those who have heard about the proposed Idaho-style stop law for Oregon (where cyclists would be allowed to treat stop signs as yield signs), here is an excellent animated explanation of how the proposed law would actually work. http://vimeo.com/4140910
Unfortunately, like all progressive ideas..there is much opposition and people are envisioning chaos in the streets (even though it has been proven safe in Idaho for 27 years with no increase in crashes)...
Unfortunately, it's easier to oppose something if you don't take the time to understand it first.
As a "vehicular cyclist", I was opposed to it before I fully understood it.
The bottom line is...if there is traffic approaching an intersection (including pedestrians), a cyclists is STILL cannot proceed until it's clear. This proposed law does NOT allow cyclists to blow through intersections with other traffic approaching and actually increases the penalty for doing so.
thanks for checking out. And thanks to Spencer Boomhower for putting the animation together.
